Praise to Allah and His Creation

Praise to Allah who created the heavens and the earth and made darkness and light. Yet those who disbelieve set up equals with their Lord.

He is the one who created you from clay and then decreed a term. And there is a specified term with Him, yet you doubt.

And He is Allah in the heavens and on the earth. He knows your secret and what you make public, and He knows what you earn.

Disbelievers Turning Away from Truth

No sign comes to them from the signs of their Lord except that they turn away from it.

They have denied the truth when it came to them, but there will come to them the news of what they used to mock.

Do they not see how many generations We destroyed before them which We had established on the earth as We have not established you? And We sent abundant rain from the sky upon them and made rivers flow beneath them; then We destroyed them for their sins and created after them other generations.

And if We had sent down to you a written scripture on parchment and they touched it with their hands, the disbelievers would say, This is nothing but obvious magic.

And they say, Why has an angel not been sent down to him? And if We had sent down an angel, the matter would have been decided; then they would not be given respite.

And if We had made him an angel, We would have made him a man and confused them in that which they are already confused.

And messengers were mocked before you, but those who ridiculed them were enveloped by that which they used to mock.

Say, Travel through the land; then observe how was the end of the deniers.

Allah's Dominion and Omniscience

Say: To whom belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth? Say: To Allah. He has decreed upon Himself mercy. He will surely gather you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. Those who have lost themselves will not believe.

And to Him belongs what rests in the night and the day, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

Say: Should I take a protector other than Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, while it is He who feeds and is not fed? Say: I have been commanded to be the first who submits and not to be of those who associate partners with Allah.

Say: I fear, if I should disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day.

He from whom it is averted that Day, Allah has granted him mercy. And that is the clear triumph.

And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him. And if He touches you with good, then He is over all things capable.

And He is the Subjugator over His servants. And He is the Wise, the Aware.

Say: What thing is greatest in testimony? Say: Allah is witness between me and you. And this Quran was revealed to me that I may warn you thereby and whomever it reaches. Do you truly testify that with Allah there are other gods? Say: I do not testify. Say: He is but one God, and indeed, I am free of what you associate with Him.

Recognition of the Prophet and the Quran

Those to whom We have given the Scripture recognize it as they recognize their own sons. Those who have lost themselves will not believe.

And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allah or denies His signs? Indeed, the wrongdoers will not succeed.

And on the Day when We will gather them all together, then We will say to those who associated others with Allah, Where are your partners that you used to claim?

Then their plea will be nothing but that they will say, By Allah, our Lord, we were not those who associated others with Allah.

See how they will lie about themselves. And lost from them will be what they used to invent.

Rejection and Argumentation of Disbelievers

Among them are those who listen to you, but We have placed veils over their hearts so they do not understand it and deafness in their ears. Even if they see every sign, they will not believe in it. When they come to argue with you, those who disbelieve say, This is nothing but tales of the ancients.

They forbid others from it and keep away from it themselves. They destroy none but themselves, yet they do not perceive.

If you could see when they are made to stand before the Fire and say, Oh, if only we could be sent back. We would not deny the signs of our Lord and we would be among the believers.

But what they used to conceal before has become clear to them. Even if they were sent back, they would return to what they were forbidden from. Indeed, they are liars.

They say, There is nothing but our worldly life, and we will not be resurrected.

If you could see when they are made to stand before their Lord. He will say, Is this not the truth? They will say, Yes, by our Lord. He will say, Then taste the punishment for what you used to deny.

Those who deny the meeting with God have certainly lost, until when the Hour comes upon them unexpectedly, they will say, Oh, how we regret neglecting it, while they bear their burdens on their backs. Unquestionably, evil is what they bear.

The worldly life is nothing but play and amusement. But the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear God. Then will you not reason?

Encouragement to the Prophet

We know that what they say grieves you. It is not you they deny, but the wrongdoers deny the signs of God.

Messengers before you were denied, but they patiently endured the denial and harm until Our help came to them. None can change the words of God, and some of the news of the messengers has already come to you.

If their rejection is hard for you, then if you can, seek a tunnel into the earth or a ladder into the sky to bring them a sign. If God had willed, He would have gathered them to guidance. So do not be among the ignorant.

Only those who listen will respond. As for the dead, God will resurrect them, then to Him they will be returned.

Demand for Signs and Allah's Power

They say, Why has no sign been sent down to him from his Lord? Say, Indeed, Allah is able to send down a sign, but most of them do not know.

There is no creature on earth or bird that flies with its wings except that they are communities like you. We have not neglected in the Book anything. Then unto their Lord they will be gathered.

But those who deny Our verses are deaf and mute within darknesses. Whomever Allah wills, He leaves astray; and whomever He wills, He puts on a straight path.

Say, Have you considered if there came to you the punishment of Allah or there came to you the Hour, would you invoke other than Allah, if you should be truthful?

No, it is Him you would call upon, and He would remove that for which you called upon Him if He willed, and you would forget what you associate.

And We have already sent to nations before you, then We seized them with poverty and hardship that perhaps they might humble themselves.

Then why, when Our punishment came to them, did they not humble themselves? But their hearts became hardened, and Satan made attractive to them that which they were doing.

Consequences of Rejecting Guidance

So when they forgot what they were reminded of, We opened for them the gates of everything until when they rejoiced in what they were given, We seized them suddenly, and they were in despair.

Thus the last remnant of the people who did wrong was cut off. And praise be to God, Lord of the worlds.

Say, Tell me if God took away your hearing and your sight and sealed your hearts, which god other than God could restore them to you? See how We explain the signs, yet they turn away.

Say, Tell me if God's punishment comes to you suddenly or openly, will any be destroyed except the wrongdoing people?

We do not send the messengers except as bearers of good news and warners. So whoever believes and reforms, there will be no fear for them, nor will they grieve.

But those who deny Our signs, punishment will touch them for their defiance.

Say, I do not tell you that I have the treasures of God or that I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me. Say, Are the blind and the seeing equal? Then will you not reflect?

Warning and Glad Tidings

And warn with it those who fear that they will be gathered before their Lord, without any protector or intercessor besides Him, so that they may become righteous.

Do not drive away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His face. You are not accountable for them in anything, nor are they accountable for you in anything, that you should drive them away and thus be among the wrongdoers.

And thus We have tried some of them through others that they might say, Is it these whom God has favored among us? Is not God most knowing of those who are grateful?

When those who believe in Our verses come to you, say, Peace be upon you. Your Lord has decreed upon Himself mercy. That whoever among you does evil in ignorance and then repents after that and corrects himself, indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful.

And thus do We detail the verses, and so the way of the criminals will become evident.

Prohibition of False Worship

Say: I am forbidden to worship those you call upon besides God. Say: I will not follow your desires, for I would then go astray and not be of the guided.

Say: I am on clear evidence from my Lord and you have denied it. I do not have what you seek to hasten. The decision rests only with God. He declares the truth, and He is the best of judges.

Say: If I had what you seek to hasten, the matter would have been decided between me and you. And God is most knowing of the wrongdoers.

Allah's Omniscience and Control

He has the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. He knows what is on land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but He knows it. There is no grain in the darkness of the earth, nor anything fresh or dry, but is in a clear record.

It is He who takes your souls by night and knows what you have earned by day. Then He revives you therein so that a specified term may be fulfilled. Then to Him will be your return; then He will inform you about what you used to do.

He is the Supreme over His servants, and He sends guardians over you until, when death comes to one of you, Our messengers take him, and they do not fail.

Then they are returned to Allah, their true Lord. Unquestionably, His is the judgment, and He is the swiftest of accountants.

Allah's Protection and Human Ingratitude

Say: Who saves you from the darkness of land and sea when you call upon Him humbly and secretly: If He saves us from this, we will surely be among the grateful.

Say: Allah saves you from it and from every distress, yet you associate others with Him.

Say: He is able to send upon you punishment from above you or from beneath your feet or to confuse you into sects and make you taste the violence of one another. See how We explain the signs that they might understand.

But your people have denied it while it is the truth. Say: I am not over you a guardian.

For every news is a fixed time, and you will come to know.

Warning Against Disrespecting the Quran

When you see those who engage in mockery about Our verses, turn away from them until they engage in a different conversation. And if Satan causes you to forget, then do not remain after remembering with the wrongdoing people.

Those who fear God are not accountable for the disbelievers in any way, but only for a reminder that they may become righteous.

Leave those who take their religion as play and amusement and whom the worldly life has deluded. But remind with it, lest a soul be given up to destruction for what it earned. It will have no protector or intercessor besides God. And if it offers every ransom, it will not be accepted from it. Those are the ones who are given to destruction for what they have earned. For them will be a drink of scalding water and a painful punishment because they used to disbelieve.

Call to True Worship and Submission

Say: Shall we call upon other than God that which neither benefits us nor harms us, and be turned back on our heels after God has guided us? Like one whom the devils have enticed in the land, confused, while he has companions calling him to guidance: Come to us. Say: Indeed, the guidance of God is the guidance, and we have been commanded to submit to the Lord of the worlds.

And to establish prayer and fear Him. And it is He to whom you will be gathered.

And it is He who created the heavens and earth in truth. And the day He says, Be, and it is. His word is the truth. And His is the dominion on the Day the Horn is blown. Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He is the Wise, the Aware.

Abraham's Search for Truth

And when Abraham said to his father Azar, Do you take idols as gods? Indeed, I see you and your people in clear error.

And thus We showed Abraham the kingdom of the heavens and the earth that he would be among the certain.

So when the night covered him, he saw a star. He said, This is my lord. But when it set, he said, I do not like those that disappear.

And when he saw the moon rising, he said, This is my lord. But when it set, he said, If my Lord does not guide me, I will surely be among the misguided people.

And when he saw the sun rising, he said, This is my lord; this is greater. But when it set, he said, O my people, indeed I am free from what you associate with God.

Indeed, I have turned my face toward He who created the heavens and the earth, inclining toward truth, and I am not of those who associate others with God.

And his people argued with him. He said, Do you argue with me concerning God while He has guided me? And I fear not what you associate with Him unless my Lord wills something. My Lord encompasses all things in knowledge; then will you not remember?

And how should I fear what you associate while you do not fear that you have associated with God that for which He has not sent down to you any authority? So which of the two parties has more right to security, if you should know?

Those who believe and do not mix their belief with wrongdoing, those will have security, and they are rightly guided.

And that was Our argument which We gave Abraham against his people. We raise by degrees whom We will. Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing.

Lineage of Prophets and Their Message

We gave him Isaac and Jacob, each We guided. And Noah We guided before, and among his descendants, David and Solomon and Job and Joseph and Moses and Aaron. Thus We reward the doers of good.

And Zechariah and John and Jesus and Elias, all were of the righteous.

And Ishmael and Elisha and Jonah and Lot, and all We preferred over the worlds.

And from among their fathers and their descendants and their brothers, We chose them and We guided them to a straight path.

That is the guidance of God by which He guides whom He wills of His servants. But if they had associated others with God, then worthless for them would be what they were doing.

Those are the ones to whom We gave the Scripture and authority and prophethood. But if these disbelieve in it, then We have entrusted it to a people who are not disbelievers in it.

Those are the ones whom God has guided, so follow their guidance. Say, I ask of you for this message no payment. It is not but a reminder for the worlds.

The Quran as Guidance

They did not appreciate God as He should be appreciated when they said, God has not sent down anything to a human. Say, Who sent down the Book which Moses brought as light and guidance for the people? You make it into pages, revealing some of it and concealing much. And you were taught what you did not know, neither you nor your fathers. Say, God did. Then leave them in their discourse, amusing themselves.

And this is a Book We have sent down, blessed and confirming what came before it, so you may warn the Mother of Cities and those around it. Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in it, and they are maintaining their prayers.

And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about God or says, It has been inspired to me, while nothing has been inspired to him, and one who says, I will reveal the like of what God has revealed. And if you could see when the wrongdoers are in the agonies of death while the angels extend their hands, saying, Discharge your souls! Today you will be awarded the punishment of humiliation for what you used to say against God other than the truth and because you were arrogant toward His verses.

And you have come to Us alone as We created you the first time, and you have left behind you what We had bestowed upon you. And We do not see with you your intercessors which you claimed were partners with God among you. Indeed, the bond between you has been severed, and lost from you is what you used to claim.

Allah's Signs in Creation

Indeed, Allah splits the seed and the kernel. He brings forth the living from the dead and brings forth the dead from the living. That is Allah, so how are you deluded?

He causes the dawn to break and has made the night for rest and the sun and moon for calculation. That is the determination of the Almighty, the Knowing.

And it is He who made for you the stars that you may be guided by them through the darknesses of the land and sea. We have detailed the signs for a people who know.

And it is He who produced you from one soul and then a place of dwelling and a place of storage. We have detailed the signs for a people who understand.

And it is He who sends down rain from the sky, and We produce thereby the growth of all things. We produce from it greenery from which We produce grains arranged in layers. And from the palm trees, from their clusters, are hanging low bunches of dates. And gardens of grapes and olives and pomegranates, similar yet varied. Look at its fruit when it yields and its ripening. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.

Refutation of Polytheism

They have made the jinn partners with God, though He created them, and they have falsely attributed to Him sons and daughters without knowledge. Glory be to Him and exalted is He above what they describe.

Originator of the heavens and the earth. How can He have a son when He has no consort? He created all things and He has knowledge of all things.

That is God, your Lord. There is no god but Him, the Creator of all things, so worship Him. And He is the Guardian over all things.

Vision cannot grasp Him, but He grasps all vision. He is the Subtle, the Aware.

Clear proofs have come to you from your Lord. Whoever sees, it is for his own soul, and whoever is blind, it is to his own detriment. And I am not a guardian over you.

Thus We explain the verses in diverse ways that they might say, You have studied, and that We might make it clear to a people who know.

Follow what has been revealed to you from your Lord. There is no god but Him. And turn away from those who associate others with God.

If God had willed, they would not have associated. We have not made you a guardian over them, nor are you their keeper.

Prohibition of Insulting False Deities

Do not insult those they invoke other than God, lest they insult God in hostility without knowledge. Thus We have made attractive to every community their deeds. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them about what they used to do.

They swear by God with their strongest oaths that if a sign came to them, they would surely believe in it. Say, The signs are only with God. And what will make you perceive that even if it came, they would not believe.

And We will turn their hearts and their eyes just as they refused to believe in it the first time. And We will leave them in their transgression, wandering blindly.

Disbelievers' Rejection of Signs

Even if We sent down angels to them, and the dead spoke to them, and We gathered everything before them, they would not believe unless God willed. But most of them are ignorant.

And thus We have made for every prophet an enemy devils from mankind and jinn, inspiring to one another decorative speech in delusion. But if your Lord had willed, they would not have done it, so leave them and what they invent.

And so the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter incline toward it and that they may be satisfied with it and that they may commit what they are committing.

The Quran as the Final Arbiter

Should I seek a judge other than God when He is the One who has sent down to you the Book explained in detail? Those to whom We gave the Scripture know that it is sent down from your Lord in truth, so do not be among the doubters.

The word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and justice. None can change His words, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

If you obey most of those on earth, they will mislead you from God's path. They follow nothing but assumption, and they do nothing but guess.

Indeed, your Lord knows best who strays from His path, and He knows best the guided ones.

Permissible and Forbidden Foods

So eat of that upon which the name of Allah has been mentioned, if you are believers in His verses.

And why should you not eat of that upon which the name of Allah has been mentioned while He has explained in detail to you what He has forbidden you, except what you are compelled to. And indeed many lead others astray through their own desires without knowledge. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of the transgressors.

And leave what is apparent of sin and what is concealed thereof. Indeed, those who earn sin will be recompensed for that which they used to commit.

And do not eat of that upon which the name of Allah has not been mentioned, for indeed, it is grave disobedience. And indeed the devils inspire their allies to dispute with you. And if you were to obey them, indeed, you would be associators.

Contrast Between Believers and Disbelievers

Is one who was dead and We gave him life and made for him a light by which he walks among the people like one who is in darkness, never to emerge from it? Thus is made attractive to the disbelievers what they were doing

And thus We have placed within every city the greatest of its criminals to conspire therein. But they conspire not except against themselves, and they perceive it not

And when a sign comes to them, they say We will never believe until we are given like that which was given to the messengers of Allah. Allah is most knowing of where He places His message. There will afflict those who committed crimes debasement before Allah and severe punishment for what they used to conspire

Allah's Will in Guiding Hearts

Whoever Allah wills to guide, He opens their heart to Islam. And whoever He wills to leave astray, He makes their chest tight and constricted as if they were climbing up into the sky. Thus Allah inflicts punishment on those who do not believe.

And this is the path of your Lord, straight. We have detailed the verses for people who remember.

For them is the Home of Peace with their Lord, and He is their protector because of what they used to do.

Evil Alliances Among Jinn and Humans

And on the day He will gather them all together: O assembly of jinn, you have misled many of mankind. And their allies among mankind will say: Our Lord, we benefited from one another, but we have reached our term which You appointed for us. He will say: The Fire is your dwelling, abiding therein forever, except as God wills. Indeed, your Lord is Wise, Knowing.

And thus We make some of the wrongdoers allies of others for what they used to earn.

O assembly of jinn and mankind, did there not come to you messengers from among you, relating to you My verses and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours? They will say: We bear witness against ourselves. And the worldly life deluded them, and they will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers.

That is because your Lord would not destroy the cities for wrongdoing while their people were unaware.

And for all are degrees according to what they have done. And your Lord is not unaware of what they do.

Allah's Mercy and Warning of Punishment

Your Lord is the Self-Sufficient, full of mercy. If He wills, He can remove you and replace you with whomever He wills, just as He produced you from the descendants of other people.

Indeed, what you are promised will come to pass, and you cannot escape it.

Say, O my people, work according to your position. I too am working. You will soon know who will have the best outcome in the Hereafter. Surely, the wrongdoers will not succeed.

Condemnation of Pagan Customs

They assign to God a share of the crops and livestock He created, saying, This is for God, and this is for our idols. But what is for their idols does not reach God, while what is for God goes to their idols. Evil is their judgment.

Likewise, their partners have made killing their children appealing to many idolaters, in order to ruin them and confuse their religion. If God had willed, they would not have done it. So leave them and what they invent.

They say, These animals and crops are forbidden. None may eat them except whom we permit. And there are animals whose backs are forbidden, and animals over which they do not mention Gods name, inventing lies against Him. He will repay them for what they used to invent.

They say, What is in the wombs of these animals is exclusively for our males and forbidden to our females. But if it is stillborn, they all share it. He will punish them for their description. He is Wise, Knowing.

Those who killed their children foolishly without knowledge and forbade what God provided for them, inventing lies about God, have certainly lost. They have gone astray and were not guided.

Allah's Provisions and Human Ingratitude

He is the one who produces gardens with trellises and without, and date palms, and crops of different flavors, and olives and pomegranates, similar yet different. Eat from their fruit when they bear, and give its due on the day of harvest. And do not waste. Indeed, He does not like the wasteful.

And of the livestock are some for burden and some for meat. Eat of what God has provided for you and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.

Eight pairs: of sheep two and of goats two. Say, Has He forbidden the two males or the two females or what the wombs of the two females contain? Inform me with knowledge if you are truthful.

And of camels two and of cattle two. Say, Is it the two males He has forbidden or the two females or what the wombs of the two females contain? Or were you witnesses when God charged you with this? Then who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about God to mislead the people without knowledge? Indeed, God does not guide the wrongdoing people.

Explanation of Forbidden Foods

Say, I do not find in what has been revealed to me anything forbidden for anyone to eat except carrion, spilled blood, pig meat for it is impure or what has been sinfully slaughtered in a name other than God. But if someone is forced by necessity, without craving or transgressing, then your Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.

For those who are Jewish, We forbade every animal with undivided hoofs, and of cattle and sheep We forbade them their fat except what is on their backs or entrails or attached to bones. This is how We penalized them for their rebellion. And We are indeed truthful.

If they deny you, say, Your Lord possesses vast mercy, but His punishment cannot be averted from the guilty people.

Refutation of Polytheists' Arguments

Those who associate partners will say, If God had willed, we would not have associated partners nor would our fathers, nor would we have forbidden anything. Likewise did those before them deny until they tasted Our punishment. Say, Do you have any knowledge that you can produce for us? You follow nothing except assumption, and you are only guessing.

Say, God has the conclusive argument. If He had willed, He would have guided you all.

Say, Bring forward your witnesses who can testify that God has forbidden this. And if they testify, do not testify with them. And do not follow the desires of those who deny Our verses and those who do not believe in the Hereafter, while they equate others with their Lord.

Fundamental Moral Teachings

Say, Come, I will recite what your Lord has forbidden to you. Do not associate anything with Him, and be good to parents, and do not kill your children out of poverty. We will provide for you and them. And do not approach immoralities, what is apparent of them and what is concealed. And do not kill the soul which God has forbidden, except by right. This has He instructed you that you may use reason.

And do not approach the orphans property except in a way that is best until he reaches maturity. And give full measure and weight in justice. We do not charge any soul except with what it can bear. And when you testify, be just, even if it concerns a near relative. And the covenant of God fulfill. This has He instructed you that you may remember.

And this is My path, straight, so follow it. And do not follow other ways, for you will be separated from His way. This has He instructed you that you may become righteous.

The Torah and Final Revelation

Then We gave Moses the Book, completing Our favor upon those who do good, and explaining everything in detail and as guidance and mercy, so that they might believe in the meeting with their Lord.

And this is a blessed Book We have sent down, so follow it and be mindful so that you may receive mercy.

Lest you say, The Book was only sent down to two groups before us, and we were unaware of their teachings.

Or lest you say, If the Book had been sent down to us, we would have been better guided than them. So there has come to you clear evidence from your Lord, and guidance and mercy. Then who is more unjust than one who denies the signs of God and turns away from them? We will repay those who turn away from Our signs with the worst punishment for their turning away.

Warning of Punishment for Disbelief

Are they waiting for the angels to come to them, or for your Lord to come, or for some of your Lord's signs to come? On the day when some of your Lord's signs come, no soul will benefit from its faith if it had not believed before or had not earned goodness through its faith. Say, Wait, we too are waiting.

Indeed, those who divide their religion and become sects, you have no association with them whatsoever. Their affair is only with God, then He will inform them about what they used to do.

Whoever comes with a good deed will have ten times the like thereof, and whoever comes with an evil deed will not be recompensed except the like thereof, and they will not be wronged.

Following the Upright Religion of Abraham

Say, Indeed, my Lord has guided me to a straight path, an upright religion, the way of Abraham, inclining toward truth. And he was not among those who associated others with God.

Say, Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for God, Lord of the worlds.

No partner has He. And this I have been commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims.

Say, Is it other than God I should desire as a lord while He is the Lord of all things? And every soul earns not except against itself, and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you concerning that over which you used to differ.

And it is He who has made you successors upon the earth and has raised some of you above others in degrees that He may try you through what He has given you. Indeed, your Lord is swift in penalty; and indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful.
