Fate of disbelievers and believers
1 Those who disbelieve and prevent others from the way of God, He will make their deeds worthless
2 And those who believe and do good deeds and believe in what was sent down to Muhammad, and it is the truth from their Lord, He will remove their misdeeds and improve their condition
3 That is because those who disbelieve follow falsehood, and those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. Thus God presents to people their examples
Instructions for warfare
4 So when you meet those who disbelieve strike their necks until you have inflicted slaughter upon them then secure their bonds and either confer favor afterwards or ransom them until the war lays down its burdens. That is the command. And if God had willed He could have taken vengeance upon them Himself but He may test some of you by means of others. And those who are killed in the cause of God He will never let their deeds be lost.
5 He will guide them and improve their condition.
6 And admit them to Paradise which He has made known to them.
Divine support and consequences of belief
7 If you support God, He will support you and make your feet firm
8 And those who disbelieve, for them is destruction and He will waste their deeds
9 That is because they hated what God revealed, so He nullified their deeds
10 Have they not traveled through the land and seen how was the end of those before them? God destroyed them, and for the disbelievers is something similar
11 That is because God is the protector of those who believe, and because the disbelievers have no protector
Comparison of believers and disbelievers
12 God will admit those who believe and do good deeds into gardens with rivers flowing beneath. Those who disbelieve enjoy themselves and eat as cattle eat, and the Fire will be their home.
13 How many towns, stronger in might than your town which expelled you, have We destroyed? They had no helper.
14 Is one who follows clear evidence from his Lord like those whose evil deeds are made appealing to them and who follow their desires?
Description of Paradise
15 The description of Paradise which the righteous are promised is that in it are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk whose taste never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey. And for them therein is every kind of fruit and forgiveness from their Lord. Are they like those who abide eternally in the Fire and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines?
Types of listeners and their understanding
16 Among them are some who listen to you. But when they leave you, they say to those who were given knowledge, What did he just say? Those are the ones whose hearts God has sealed and who follow their desires.
17 As for those who are guided, He increases them in guidance and grants them their righteousness.
Signs of the Final Hour
18 So do they await except for the Hour to come upon them suddenly? Its signs have already come, so what good to them is their reminder when it has come to them?
Devotion to God and societal conduct
19 Know that there is no god but God and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women. God knows your movements and your resting places.
20 Those who believe say why has a chapter not been sent down? But when a decisive chapter is sent down and fighting is mentioned in it, you see those with disease in their hearts looking at you with the look of one fainting from death. So woe to them.
21 Obedience and good words. And when the matter is determined, if they were true to God it would be better for them.
Warning against hypocrisy and corruption
22 So would you perhaps, if you turned away, cause corruption on earth and sever your ties of kinship
23 Those are the ones that God has cursed, so He deafened them and blinded their sight
24 Do they not reflect on the Quran, or are there locks upon their hearts
25 Indeed, those who turned back after guidance had become clear to them, Satan enticed them and prolonged hope for them
26 That is because they said to those who disliked what God sent down, We will obey you in part of the matter. And God knows what they conceal
God's knowledge of hidden intentions
27 But how will it be when the angels take them in death, striking their faces and their backs
28 That is because they followed what angered God and disliked His pleasure, so He rendered their deeds worthless
29 Or do those with disease in their hearts think that God will not expose their spite
30 And if We willed, We could show them to you, and you would know them by their mark. But you will surely know them by the tone of speech. And God knows your deeds
Testing of believers and reward for good deeds
31 We will surely test you until We know those who strive among you and those who are patient, and We will test your affairs.
32 Indeed, those who disbelieve and obstruct from the way of God and oppose the Messenger after guidance has become clear to them will never harm God in any way, and He will render their deeds worthless.
Exhortation to obedience and warning against disobedience
33 O you who believe, obey God and obey the Messenger, and do not invalidate your deeds
34 Indeed, those who disbelieve and obstruct from the way of God, then die while they are disbelievers, God will never forgive them
35 So do not weaken and call for peace while you are superior, and God is with you and will never deprive you of your deeds
Temporary nature of worldly life and call to charity
36 The life of this world is only play and amusement. If you believe and are mindful of God, He will give you your rewards and will not ask you for your wealth.
37 If He were to ask you for it and press you, you would withhold and it would bring out your resentment.
38 Here you are, invited to spend in the cause of God, but among you are those who withhold. Whoever withholds only withholds against himself. God is the Self Sufficient, while you are the needy. If you turn away, He will replace you with other people, and they will not be like you.
